Photo of the Day: Remembrance Day

Major Herold Tladi and Master Warrant Officer Casper Coetzee of 6th South African Infantry lay wreaths on Sunday during Grahamstown's Remembrance Day celebrations. The mayor and many others, including students from local schools, also laid wreaths. One WWII veteran who came for the ceremony, a man named Viv Glass, was 101 years old. See the rest of the photos, both mine and Michael Salzwedel's here: http://www.grocotts.co.za/rem2011

Photo of the Day: Trees at Grey Dam

Cool trees near Grey Dam in Grahamstown. The dam has a grill where you can braai food you bring, and there are some nice trails for running. I came here for a run last Sunday and was scrambling to get off the mountain before it got too dark. I was imagining all the snakes out in the bushes...

Photo of the Day: Port Elizabeth

Constitution Hill in Port Elizabeth. I've taken a couple of trips here in the past week to try and file a visa extension. At traveler who passed through in 1851 wrote: “It is a barren, desolate-looking place. The town lies scattered along the inhospitable shore, upon which beats ceaselessly and sullenly the heavy dangerous surf.” I think that's a bit harsh, actually, and I found it fairly pretty. The wind is constant and biting, however.

Photo of the Day: Guy Fawkes Day

"Remember, remember, the 5th of November." Liyema Daniels may be only 9, but he was eager to prove his bravery during impromptu Guy Fawkes Day celebrations in Joza township on Saturday. In this photo he is gingerly holding a small firecracker as the older boys look on. Don't worry, he wasn't hurt, it was just a little popper. Foolishness among boys is universal, huh?

Photo of the Day: Night Bowls

Playing night bowls at the Albany Sports Club on Wednesday night. Grocott's fields a team as part of a tournament that brings a lot of other local business teams. Wednesday we got beaten by the Kenrich car dealership, although we were tied going into the last inning.

Photo of the Day: Ethembeni Soup Kitchen

Women from the community and staff at the soup kitchen in Ethembeni, Grahamstown. They were singing to thank staff from Pick n Pay supermarket, which has donated provisions for the past several weeks.

Photo of the Day: Donkey Carnival

The annual Donkey Carnival on Saturday. The cart owners are judged on how they treat their donkeys, the condition of the harnesses, etc. I was a little lost at first finding my way to the place, but fortunately 60 donkeys leave a trail on the road that is pretty easy to follow...

Photo of the Day: Sunset

Sunset in Grahamstown.

Photo of the Day: Flippin’ Sweet

The family of a boy who drowned in an accident last year decided to throw a huge carnival for 400 local schoolkids on what would have been his 8th birthday. I went along to photograph with Caroline, one of our sub-editors, who was reporting. This young boy, Lunde Plaatjies, came up to me and said, "do you want to see something?" Then he ran and flipped over his friends Bevan and Josh.

Photo of the Day: WildREACH

Sisipho, a seventh grader at Ntaba Maria school, feeds one of the elephants at Kwantu Elephant Sanctuary. WildREACH is a Rhodes program that combines educational content with trips to game parks to try and give local youth a greater stake in environmental and wildlife conservation. How great is the elephant's face, though?
